Meet Our Coloured Ryeland Sheep at Abbey Green Farm

One of the questions we are asked most often by our guests is, "Who are the sheep?"
This summer we were delighted to welcome four beautiful Coloured Ryeland sheep to Abbey Green Farm. They have quickly become much-loved members of the farm and are always keen to greet anyone who happens to be walking by, especially if they think there might be a tasty snack involved!
We chose Coloured Ryelands because of their gentle temperament, compact size and charming teddy bear appearance. They are a traditional British breed, known for producing naturally coloured fleece in lovely shades of cream, caramel and chocolate brown.
Why did we decide to keep sheep?
Abbey Green Farm has 8 acres of permanent pasture, and for many years the fields have been grazed by sheep belonging to local farmers. This year we decided it was time to have a small flock of our own.
Not only do they help keep our pastures healthy, but they also bring another little piece of farm life for our guests to enjoy during their stay.
Whether you're visiting for a peaceful B&B break, camping holiday or a stay in our Orchard Hideaway glamping pod, seeing the sheep quietly grazing in the fields adds to the relaxing countryside atmosphere.
Curious little characters.
Like all sheep, each one has its own personality.
Some are naturally confident and will wander over to investigate what's happening, while others prefer to hang back until they know there might be food involved!
Watching them explore their new home and settle into life at Abbey Green Farm has been a real pleasure.
A traditional British breed.
Coloured Ryelands are one of Britain's oldest native sheep breeds. They are hardy, friendly and well suited to small farms like ours.
Their soft fleece is highly prized by hand spinners and crafters, while their calm nature makes them a favourite with families and smallholders alike.
Visiting the sheep.
Guests are very welcome to admire our sheep from outside the fencing while they enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
For the safety and welfare of the sheep, we kindly ask that they are not fed by guests and that dogs remain on a lead at all times when walking around the farm.
We hope our little flock brings as much enjoyment to your visit as they bring to us every day. We look forward to introducing you to them on your next stay at Abbey Green Farm.
